A 2025 Look at Future Industry Trends
If you read “A 2025 Look at Local Industry Trends,” found here, you already know that healthcare services, technology and innovation, the energy sector, advanced manufacturing, and the tourism and hospitality industry are projected to drive economic growth in Pennsylvania and neighboring states this year and in the year to come. Today, let’s continue this two-part series with a look at future industry trends and long-term predictions.
E-commerce and Online Retail
The popularity of online shopping is creating unprecedented opportunities for e-commerce, leading major companies like Amazon to expand their fulfillment centers in Pennsylvania (a strategic location on the East Coast) to meet the growing demand, according to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This shift in the way we shop is expected to not only continue but to increase, stressing the importance of a professional website, transportation and logistics services, dropshipping capabilities, and digital marketing to capture and retain customers.
Advanced Manufacturing
According to State Regs Today, Pennsylvania “has a long history of manufacturing, and now, advanced manufacturing techniques incorporating automation, robotics, and digital technology are gaining traction. This industry is expected to continue growing as companies seek to increase efficiency and reduce costs.” To support this evolution, a focus on innovation, sustainability, and workforce development is key, such as the Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) Tax Credit and the Manufacturing PA Training-to-Career Grant Program that supports the growth of Pennsylvania’s advanced manufacturing industry.
Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals
Pennsylvania and nearby states are home to several biotech and pharmaceutical companies. Well-known examples include GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), headquartered in Philadelphia, as well as Bristol Myers Squibb, headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, and Pfizer, Headquartered in New York City, with locations across our region. Future industry opportunities lie in research and development, drug manufacturing, and biotech startups, driven by advancements in medical science and technology.
Green Technology
The push for environmental sustainability is expected to drive future growth, and Pennsylvania has the potential to become a hub for green tech, from rural parts of the state to large cities like Pittsburgh. Opportunities exist in hybrid/electric vehicles and supply chain initiatives that reduce carbon emissions, renewable energy solutions, eco-friendly manufacturing and infrastructure modernization, and advancements in organic farming, each contributing to the progress of green technology in Pennsylvania.
Education and Training Services
With the growing demand for skilled workers, there is a need for providers of vocational training, online education platforms, and professional development courses. These services help to fill the workforce gap in Pennsylvania and create opportunities for entrepreneurs to make money by sharing their knowledge. State Regs Today reports that workforce development programs “play a vital role in supporting industry growth in Pennsylvania.”
