A 2025 Look at Local Industry Trends
The first quarter of 2025 is coming to an end, and there is no better time to look at local industry trends and projections. “These trends highlight the diverse and dynamic business landscape in Pennsylvania, offering potential for growth and success in various industries,” according to Paul Douglas, EMSDC’s MBEIC Chair.
In case you didn’t know, the MBEIC is a dedicated group of ambassadors that serves as a liaison between our corporate members and certified supplier community, developing new connections, strengthening relationships, promoting programs and initiatives that facilitate growth, and providing advice on important issues. Healthcare Services
It’s easy to understand why the healthcare industry is vital to Pennsylvania and its economy. Currently, an aging population and increasing demand for physicians, nurses, dentists, and other medical and wellness providers are creating significant opportunities in the state. On March 7, 2025, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania reported that Governor Josh Shapiro’s proposed 2025-26 budget includes recruitment and retention incentives for healthcare professionals and a multi-million dollar investment in PA hospitals, especially in rural and urban areas.
Technology and Innovation
Per State Regs Today, “Pennsylvania has seen a rise in tech startups and innovation hubs, particularly in cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.” Touting the first statewide economic development strategy in nearly two decades while touring businesses in the Philly area, Rick Siger, Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary, recently noted that, “The success of technology and life sciences entrepreneurs is key to Pennsylvania’s economic growth in every region of our Commonwealth.” This strategy includes addressing “barriers to success” for new businesses in areas of tech and innovation.
Energy Sector
State Regs Today also reports that Pennsylvania’s energy sector, including electric, “natural gas, nuclear energy, and renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, has been another key driver of economic growth” in recent years. The state’s strategic location, close to major U.S. markets, and an abundance of natural resources make it an ideal place for energy production and distribution. As such, energy sector jobs are on the rise, increasing 5.9% from 2021-22, according to a 2023 report from the Pennsylvania Department of Energy.
Advanced Manufacturing
Pennsylvania’s modern manufacturing industry continues to evolve, and companies in sectors such as aerospace, automotive, and electronics are leading the charge with advanced technologies that include 3D printing, nanomaterials, robotics, automation, and more. According to the PA Department of Community and Economic Development, Advanced Manufacturing is “the backbone of our economy,” accounting for “10% of all jobs in Pennsylvania,” with an “economic impact of more than $116 billion.”
Tourism and Hospitality
Pennsylvania is a popular destination for visitors, thanks to our scenic landscapes, famous historic sites, and unique attractions. Naturally, the tourism and hospitality industry contributes greatly to the economy by providing jobs and boosting revenue for local businesses. City and State PA reports that Philly, in particular, is set to experience “a historic influx of visitors and dollars” in the near future, as one of the host cities of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and home of the MLB All-Star Game, the PGA Championship, and the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament. The same is true with the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh.
While our focus today has been on Pennsylvania, these industry trends are also happening in New Jersey, Delaware, and beyond. Paul Douglas says, “If you need more detailed information or specific resources on local industry trends, feel free to ask.” Remember, the MBEIC is here to help our certified supplier members!
