Are You Engaged: How To Maximize The Impact of Your Mission Statement as an MBE

Having a social purpose is a vital component of being engaged with not only your customer base but also as a certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE). And there is no better way to inform the public of your fundamental values and goals than through your mission statement. As defined by Investopedia, “A mission statement is used by a company to explain, in simple and concise terms, its purpose(s) for being. The statement is generally short, either a single sentence or a short paragraph.” Whether used to connect with your target audience or to form partnerships through supplier diversity channels, your mission statement proves your values and goals are mutually aligned. Here, we will discuss how to maximize the impact of your mission statement as an MBE.

The Power of Social Purpose

Revisiting the idea of a social purpose as it relates to better business, the United Way notes that, “In an increasingly digital and global market, it’s no longer good enough to just make or deliver the best products. Instead, more and more businesses are being judged by the values they hold and by the effect they’re having in the larger community. And today’s employees and consumers choose to do business with companies that make the world a better place.” Social purpose is “an engine for good, creating social benefits by the very act of conducting business. Its growth is a positive force in society,” as highlighted by Curious Earth.

Why Mission Statements Matter

Black Girl Ventures touched upon this topic in a 2021 article titled, “Is Your Mission Statement Too Generic? 6 Ways To Maximize Its Impact.” According to the organization, mission statements matter because they not only “reflect a business’ purpose” but also “help shape the company’s culture and ensure that it holds to its values.” Their advice for being clearly mission-driven? Find the human value in your company (for your employees, customers, and business partners), and deliver on your promise.

Crafting an Impactful Mission Statement

  • Per Black Girl Ventures, “Great mission statements are specific, inspiring, and action-oriented. They help the leaders of an organization to focus on what matters most in their daily work. The definition of every word counts—choose words that reflect the passion and spirit you approach your business.”
  • Per Indeed, mission statements should also help your audience to better understand what sets your business/organization apart from the crowd. “Make sure your mission statement is inclusive of the company’s future. Though the company culture or goals may change over time, ensure your current mission statement reflects its long-term goals.”
  • Per Masterclass, “Your company’s mission statement does little good if you write it and file it away. Make sure you share your mission statement with your customers, your employees, your partners, investors, and the public at every opportunity…. Put your mission statement on your website, written materials, marketing documents, and internal communications.”

The US Chamber of Commerce states that, “For small business owners in underrepresented demographics, having a certification can open the doors to sustainable growth and success.” It can also help business owners discover and develop their identities to achieve their goals.
